Why scanners produce blank pages

Duplex scanners photograph both sides of every sheet regardless of whether the reverse carries anything. A 40-page single-sided document scanned in duplex mode arrives as 80 pages, half of them empty. Sheet feeders also pick up separator sheets and the occasional blank inserted to pad a section.

These pages are not truly empty in the file. They contain a full-page photograph of blank paper, complete with scanner speckle, a grey band along one edge, and whatever dust was on the glass. That is why deleting them by checking for empty content does not work.

How detection actually works here

Every page is rendered and measured for how much of it is genuinely inked, ignoring the faint grey that scanners add. Pages below the threshold you choose are removed; everything else is kept exactly as it was.

The measurement is deliberately tuned so that speckle and edge shadows register as blank while a single line of body text does not. A page carrying nothing but a running header sits between the two, which is what the sensitivity setting is for.

Choosing a sensitivity

Strict removes only pages with no real mark on them - safe for any document, and the right choice when every page might matter.

Normal additionally drops pages carrying nothing but a page number, which is the usual behaviour you want on a duplex scan.

Loose also removes pages with only a running header. Useful on report scans, but check the result: on some documents a header-only page is a genuine section break.

Always review the result

The tool reports which page numbers it removed. Compare that against the original before discarding it, particularly on legal or financial documents where an intentionally blank page ("this page intentionally left blank") is part of the record and should be kept.
