PDF to PNG: what to know before you start

A PDF exported as lossless PNG images, one per page

Why PNG for document pages

PNG is lossless. Every pixel comes out exactly as rendered, with no compression artefacts around text edges, table rules or chart lines. For a page of text, a diagram or a screenshot, that is a visibly better result than JPEG.

PNG also supports transparency, which matters when a page will be composited over another background rather than displayed on its own.

The cost is file size

A lossless page image is several times larger than the JPEG equivalent, and on a photograph-heavy page there is no visible benefit to justify it. Use PNG for text and graphics, JPG for photographs and scans.

At 300 DPI a single A4 page becomes roughly 2480 x 3508 pixels. That is genuine print resolution and produces large files - only go there if the images are actually being printed.

Exporting part of a document

Set a page range in the options to export only the pages you need. Converting a 200-page document when you want page 47 wastes time and produces a ZIP you then have to search through.

Frequently asked questions

PNG or JPG - which should I pick?

PNG is lossless, so text edges and line art stay perfectly crisp. JPG files are much smaller and better suited to photo-heavy pages.

Do PNG exports keep transparency?

PDF pages have a white background, so the exported PNGs are opaque.

Why is a 300 DPI file so large?

300 DPI stores roughly four times as many pixels as 150 DPI. Use it only when you plan to print.
