XML Sitemap Generator: what to know before you start
What a sitemap is for
A sitemap is a list of URLs you want crawled. It does not make pages rank and it does not guarantee indexing - it helps discovery, which matters most on new sites with few backlinks and on large sites where some pages sit many clicks from the homepage.
For a small, well-linked site a sitemap changes little. For a new domain with no inbound links it is one of the few ways Google learns your pages exist at all.
The fields, honestly
Only two of the four elements carry real weight.
- loc - the canonical URL. Must be absolute, must be the version you want indexed, and must return 200.
- lastmod - genuinely used by Google, but only if it is accurate. Stamping every URL with the build time teaches crawlers to ignore the field entirely.
- changefreq - largely ignored. Harmless if honest.
- priority - completely ignored by Google. Setting everything to 1.0 achieves nothing.
What not to include
Only list canonical, indexable URLs that return 200. Leave out anything that redirects, 404s, carries a noindex tag, or canonicalises to a different page. A sitemap full of non-canonical URLs sends contradictory signals and reduces trust in the whole file.
The limits are 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file. Beyond that, split into multiple sitemaps and reference them from a sitemap index.
After you upload it
Save the file at your site root as sitemap.xml, reference it from robots.txt with a Sitemap line, and submit it in Google Search Console. Then watch the Pages report: the gap between submitted and indexed is where the real information is, and Search Console states the reason for each exclusion.
