Govt Exam & Passport Photo Resizer: what to know before you start

A photo resized to exact exam dimensions and file size

Why exam portals reject photo uploads

Indian exam and passport portals check two things independently, and a photo has to pass both. First the pixel dimensions, which encode a physical size - 3.5 x 4.5 cm at 300 DPI is 413 x 531 pixels. Second the file size in kilobytes, which is usually capped between 20 KB and 200 KB depending on the form.

A photo straight from a phone fails both: it is far too large in pixels and far too heavy in kilobytes. Cropping alone does not fix the file size, and compressing alone does not fix the dimensions, which is why generic image tools tend not to help.

The presets and what they map to

Each preset sets both values together so the output satisfies the form on the first attempt.

  • SSC, UPSC, IBPS and most state exams: 3.5 x 4.5 cm, 413 x 531 px, with KB caps between 20 and 100.
  • Exam signature: 3.5 x 1.5 cm, 413 x 177 px, typically capped near 15 KB.
  • US and most international passports: 2 x 2 inch (5.1 x 5.1 cm), 600 x 600 px, up to around 200 KB.

Photographing the original

The resizer crops to fill the frame from the centre, so what you feed it matters. Shoot against a plain light wall in even daylight, with the head roughly filling the upper two thirds and a little space above the hair. Avoid shadows on the background - most portals reject those separately from the size checks.

HEIC photos from an iPhone are converted automatically, so you can upload them exactly as they come off the phone.

If the target size cannot be reached

A busy or noisy background costs disproportionate file size, because compression has to encode all that detail. If the tool reports it could not reach your target, retaking the photo against a plain wall almost always fixes it - far more reliably than compressing harder, which visibly degrades the face.
