2-Up / 4-Up PDF Layout: what to know before you start
What 2-up and 4-up printing does
N-up layout places several source pages onto one sheet of paper. Two-up stacks two pages per A4 sheet, halving your paper and printing cost. Four-up arranges four in a 2x2 grid and quarters it.
The common use is lecture slides and study notes, where each source page carries little content and printing one per sheet wastes most of the paper. It is also useful for proofing a long document before committing to a full print run.
Readability is the limit
Two-up keeps text at roughly 70% of its original height, which stays comfortable for most documents. Four-up halves it, and that is where dense body text starts to become hard work.
A reliable rule: if the source page is mostly a slide with a heading and a few bullets, four-up reads fine. If it is a page of continuous prose at 11 point, stay with two-up.
Mixed page sizes and orientation
Each source page is scaled to fit its cell with its aspect ratio intact and then centred, so a document mixing portrait and landscape pages comes out correctly rather than stretched. Landscape pages simply occupy less vertical space within their cell.
Output sheets are A4 portrait. If your source is already landscape throughout, two-up will leave more white space than you might expect - that is the aspect ratio being preserved rather than a fault.
