Sign PDF: what to know before you start

A handwritten signature placed onto a PDF page

What this is, and what it is not

This adds a visible, handwritten-style signature image to the page - what most forms, agreements and internal approvals actually ask for.

It is not a cryptographic digital signature. It does not carry a certificate, does not prove who applied it, and does not detect later tampering. If you need a legally binding digital signature under eIDAS, the IT Act or ESIGN, you need a qualified certificate provider rather than an image.

Three ways to create the signature

Draw it with a mouse, trackpad or finger. A finger on a phone screen gives a surprisingly natural result - better than a mouse for most people.

Type your name and pick a handwriting style. Fast and legible, though it looks typed rather than signed on close inspection.

Upload a photo of a real signature. Sign a white sheet in dark ink, photograph it in even light, and upload. A PNG with a transparent background gives the cleanest placement.

Placing it

Drag the signature onto the page preview and pull its corner to resize. Move to another page and place it again to sign multiple pages - initialling every page of a contract is a common requirement.

The signature is drawn permanently into the page when you apply it, so check the placement before committing. Keep the unsigned original in case a correction is needed.
