Add Page Numbers to PDF: what to know before you start
Starting from a page other than the first
Cover pages, title pages and tables of contents usually should not carry a number. Set a page range such as 2-20 in advanced options and numbering is applied only to those pages, leaving the cover clean.
Separately, Starting Number controls what the first numbered page is called. Set it to 5 and numbering begins at 5 - useful when a document continues from another, as in a multi-volume report or a chapter extracted from a larger work.
Position and format
Bottom centre is the convention for reports, essays and theses. Bottom right suits documents that will be bound on the left. Top right is common in legal and corporate documents where the footer carries other information.
Formats range from a bare number to "Page 3 of 24". Including the total helps readers of a printed document know how much remains, and helps anyone reassembling loose pages.
Keeping numbers off your content
Numbers are placed in the margin, but margins vary. If your layout runs close to the edge, increase the distance from edge setting or move the number to a different corner.
On a document with existing footers, check a few pages after numbering rather than assuming - an overlap is obvious once you look and easy to miss if you do not.
Frequently asked questions
