How to Add Pages to a PDF

A PDF cannot be edited like a Word document, so you cannot just click and type a new page into it. What you can do is combine it with another PDF that holds the new pages. Once you think of it that way, adding a cover page, a signed form or an extra scan takes about a minute.

Merge PDF

Step 1: get the new pages into a PDF

Where the new page comes from decides the first step:

  1. 1A page from another PDF: nothing to do, use that file as it is.
  2. 2A Word or Google Docs page: export or download it as PDF.
  3. 3A photo or scan: convert it with JPG to PDF or Scan Image to PDF.
  4. 4A blank page: make an empty document in Word or Docs and export it as PDF.

Step 2: combine the files in the right order

Upload the original PDF and the new one to Merge PDF. Drag them into the order you want and press Merge PDF. To add pages at the end, put the new file second. For a cover page, put it first.

To add pages in the middle, split the original first. Say the new page belongs after page 5: use Split PDF to cut the original into pages 1-5 and 6 onwards, then merge three files in order: part one, the new page, part two.

On a Mac, Preview can do it directly

Preview can insert pages without any other tool.

  1. 1Open the original PDF and choose View > Thumbnails.
  2. 2Click the thumbnail the new page should follow.
  3. 3Choose Edit > Insert > Page from File and pick the PDF with the new pages.
  4. 4Save with File > Export as PDF so the original stays untouched.

Check the result

Scroll through the combined file once before you send it. The two mistakes worth catching are pages in the wrong order and a page that came out sideways, which Rotate PDF fixes permanently.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add pages to a PDF on Windows without software?

Windows has no built-in PDF editor, so use an online tool such as Merge PDF. It runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install.

Will adding pages reduce the quality?

No. Merging copies the pages as they are, so text stays sharp and images keep their resolution.

Can I add a page to a signed PDF?

You can, but a digital signature only covers the content that existed when it was signed. Adding pages usually shows the signature as invalid or the document as modified, so add pages before signing.
